Bigelow Highlands neighborhood

History of Bigelow Highlands

The Bigelow Highlands, which used to be known as Working Man’s Hill, is home to almost a thousand residents, as well as a scattering of businesses, two churches, and a small community garden on the corner of Tullis and Yew. Our neighborhood began with the Bigelow family, whose children built houses on the hill. In the early decades of the 20th century, when Olympia was a lumber town, houses were built for mill workers and the construction workers who built the state capitol. Over the years, vacant lots have filled in, giving our neighborhood a refreshingly diverse array of ages and styles of housing within the means of working families. Today we take pride in our neighborhood’s diversity, and its tradition of friendliness and mutual support.
