What is the BHNA?

Who we are

The Bigelow Highlands Neighborhood Association strengthens ties among the people in our neighborhood, and between our neighborhood and the city of Olympia. We don’t differentiate between renters and property owners; all residents and business owners in our area are welcome as members of this non-profit organization.

What we do

We hold several general meetings a year, at which residents can speak to members of the Fire, Police, Public Works, and Parks Departments, and discuss any and all concerns about life in our neighborhood. We also invite candidates for city elections to our annual party in Bigelow Park on the Saturday after Labor Day. (Clowns and fire trucks are known to turn up there, too).

Ongoing projects include door-to-door neighborhood mapping for emergency planning purposes, and a possible community garden on the edge of the Capital Vision Christian Church’s dog field, on northeast Yew Avenue between Marion and Fir Streets.

In mid-June, we clog the sidewalks for our Art and Garden Walking Tour.

Of course, throughout the year, people get together to have fun in less official ways. From watching the Lakefair fireworks shoulder-to-shoulder on the grass at Bigelow Park, to caroling from house-to-house through the snow, it’s part of our organization’s mission to recognize and encourage such demonstrations of community spirit. We strive to maintain our area’s unique character, honor its past, and improve it for those who will call it home in the future.

How BHNA is organized
